Here’s some tape + copy that made its way onto All Things Considered on KPCC.
As the tsunami generated by the Japan earthquake got close to the California coast, former KPCC producer Jacob Margolis grabbed a microphone and headed to the Santa Cruz Harbor.
He was talking to a man named Chad who’d come by to see if his friends’ boats were OK. That’s when another surge rolled in.
(Tape)
Dozens of boats were pulled loose from their moorings as the tsunami surge rolled in and out of the Santa Cruz Harbor. Some capsized; others slammed into nearby vessels.
Officials in Santa Cruz put the damage in the harbor at about 14-million dollars.
